William "Bill" Sergeant

Bill Sergeant is chairman of R.I's International PolioPlus Committee charged with directing Rotary's global efforts to eradicate Polio.

Bill has served Rotary International as vice-president, as director, and as a Rotary Foundation Trustee.  He has also served as chairman of the 1900 (Portland) Convention Committee, and as vice-chairman of the 1987 (Munich) Convention Committee.  As Director of Instruction at the International Assembly, he headed the staff charged with the training of incoming district governors from all over the Rotary World.  In 1995 and 1989 he served as chairman of R.I.'s Council on Legislation.

Bill has been appointed by R.I. presidents to represent them at district conferences in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Philippines, India, Malaysia, France, Japan, Kenya, Turkey, Finland, Dominican Republic, England, Australia, Denmark, South Africa, Holland, and Puerto Rico.  he has also had Rotary assignments which took him to Jamaica, Brazil, Belgium, Russia, Mauritius, Korea, Singapore, Monaco, Germany, Zimbabwe, Switzerland, Scotland, Thailand, Taiwan and Cambodia.

Bill has received The Rotary Foundation's Citation for Meritorious Service and the Distinguished Service Award for his special services to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

Since his retirement as Director of Safeguards and Security for the U.S. Department of Energy, Oak Ridge Operations, he has been a nuclear weapons security consultant and an insurance manager.

Born in Richmond, Virginia, he was educated in the public schools of Richmond, and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. degree in General Science.

He is the recipient of the Oak Ridge Chapter of the Knights of Columbus' annual Columbus Award for Outstanding Service in the field of civic affairs in his city.  He is a member of the Rotary Club of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

In November 1998 he received the first Kellogg/Hannah Neil "International World of Children Award."  The award recognized Bill's work on eradication of Polio.

Bill resides with his wife, Carolyn, in Knoxville, Tennessee.  He continues to be a member of the Rotary Club of Oak Ridge where his office is located.  Bill has four children and Carolyn has three.
