Here is the text
of Derran's speech

Derran Moss -- Born and bred in Brisbane, Derran studied political science and law as an undergraduate at the University of Queensland, graduating in 1996 with a BA in the International Relations and 1998 with an LLB as valedictorian of his year. Derran then worked for His Honor Judge Boyce QC in the District Court of Queensland for two years, and was admitted to the Bar in 2002, before moving to Canberra to work with the Attorney-General's Department. At the AGD, he worked primarily in the Office of International Law and the Protective Security Coordination Centre. Word in these areas focused upon international criminal law, international litigation and counter-terrorism, and included a four-month stint in the counter-terrorism watch-ffice in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Also during this period, Derran continued his studies in international law through a Masters of International Law at the University of Queensland and the Australian National University, which he will complete at the end of this year. Having been awarded the Rotary World Peace Scholarship, Derran moved to North Carolina in August of 2002 and is studying a Masters in Political Science, majoring in International Relations and International Security. His thesis is on the privatization of security and the outsourcing of military power, and the impact that these issues have upon democratic institutins and peace-building. In particular, he is focusing upon the issue of the use of private military fources in United Nations peace enforcement operations.

Arnold King provides the following notes summarizing District 7690's support of The Rotary Foundation:

Attached are three reports that reflect some of the numbers that I made reference to last night at the Foundation Banquet.

Some of my comments, in reference to these numbers, were:

  • Annual Giving (2002-03) - $102.11 per capita District average placing District 7690 in the top 25 Districts in the world (actually #24)
  • We had 23 clubs that averaged $100+ in Annual Giving last year and four of them averaged $200+.
  • $2,061,875 in Annual Giving over the past 6 years means that $1.2 million will be spent in the District (thru the SHARE program) for scholarships and matching grants.
  • Total Giving in the District last year ($650,139.88) was almost $120,000 more than our best year ever (1987-88). Beat our previous best year by 22.5%.
  • Major Donors: 51 (Most of any District in Zones 33 and 34)
  • Bequest Society: 68 Charter Members (#1 District in the world)
  • Currently - 99 members of Bequest Society (still #1 District in the world)
  • 100% Paul Harris Fellow Clubs: 18 in the District - #4 District in the World
  • D3750 (Korea) - 41 clubs
  • D2650 (Japan) - 22 clubs
  • D5000 (Hawaii) - 21 clubs
  • 31,561 Rotary clubs - Only 443 (1.4%) are 100% PHF
  • Of the 529 Districts, 385 of them (73%) have no 100% PHF clubs
  • Outside of District 7690, there are only six (6) 100% PHF clubs in the entire states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Virginia
