Derran Moss -- Born and bred in Brisbane, Derran studied political science and law as an undergraduate at the University of Queensland, graduating in 1996 with a BA in the International Relations and 1998 with an LLB as valedictorian of his year. Derran then worked for His Honor Judge Boyce QC in the District Court of Queensland for two years, and was admitted to the Bar in 2002, before moving to Canberra to work with the Attorney-General's Department. At the AGD, he worked primarily in the Office of International Law and the Protective Security Coordination Centre. Word in these areas focused upon international criminal law, international litigation and counter-terrorism, and included a four-month stint in the counter-terrorism watch-ffice in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Also during this period, Derran continued his studies in international law through a Masters of International Law at the University of Queensland and the Australian National University, which he will complete at the end of this year. Having been awarded the Rotary World Peace Scholarship, Derran moved to North Carolina in August of 2002 and is studying a Masters in Political Science, majoring in International Relations and International Security. His thesis is on the privatization of security and the outsourcing of military power, and the impact that these issues have upon democratic institutins and peace-building. In particular, he is focusing upon the issue of the use of private military fources in United Nations peace enforcement operations. |
