Fellow Rotarians, our public image and our “Service above Self” attitude should shine for everyone to see. And in line with the international call to action, “Creating Hope in the World”, it would be wonderful if District 7690 shows that effort ‘publicly’! I always say: perception is everything. So that representation will rely on each and every club within our district to have fun with their smart device and capture what we do so well.

As the Public Image Officer for my club, Western Forsyth, I can speak directly to how our membership increase has been directly influenced by our visibility. Utilizing every member of our club to participate in being a part of our public image. Whether it’s attending rotary events; participating in donations, tutoring, or public/fund raising events. Having a real time, real moment picture or video (content) is imperative. We as Rotarians have a unique opportunity to lead by example in a multitude of ways. Using our tremendously diverse club members throughout the district will be key going forward, especially to bring in more like-minded individuals to our clubs!

As our new Rotary International President mentioned in his call-to-action article in Rotary Mag: “Building peace is the essence of Rotary”. That peace comes from teamwork and a sense of togetherness that we as Rotarians understand very well. So, let’s show the ‘public’ that ‘image’!

Sept. 2022 – Article for the Piedmont Rotarian

The Rotary Club of High Point was quick to respond to DG Debbie Scott’s encouragement for each club to improve its Public Image.  A number of opportunities were identified, and a high visibility project was selected as having the potential to be seen by large numbers of people.  With the approval of its Board, Rotary Club leaders wasted no time meeting with Assistant City Managers and Department Heads to garner the approval of the City for the project which targeted a location on City Property.  Known as ’The Peanut’ to City personnel, the property is actually the peanut shaped round-about where Elm, Lindsay, Hillcrest, and W. Parkway converge.  The location is in close proximity to the High Point Public Library where soon the new Rotary Club of High Point Sensory Garden, its Centennial Project, will commence construction.

The Rotary Club of High Point has donated signage to the City of High Point that depicts Rotary’s Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do and is, of course, a test used by Rotarians world-wide as a moral code for personal and business relationships. The test can be applied to almost any aspect of life. “We want to share with more people what we stand for” said Rotarian Mark Pierce who praised the City for its cooperation in the effort to expose more people to the values and justice contained in the Four Way Test.  “This also shows how beneficial partnerships between Civic organizations and the city we love can be.”  Pierce hopes this leads to more cooperation between the City and the Rotary Club of High Point in making High Point an increasingly better place to Live, Work, and Play!

High Point Rotarians fully funded the sign initiative and will maintain the signage while the City did the installation.  The metal, reflective signs will be clearly readable on the perimeter of the nicely landscaped sidewalk area that surrounds a sculpture in the center of a circular sidewalk.  The sculpture, entitled “Family”, was sponsored by the High Point Club a number of years ago.  A sign identifies the Rotary Club of High Point and contains the Club’s “QR” code that is linked to its Website.

The Round-About and its pathways are scheduled to become part of an extended walking trail through High Point in the near future. That greenway trail, including bicycle pathways, will connect with the Greenway that currently terminates at Armstrong Park and will run through the city’s downtown area which is undergoing a major transformation that includes Congdon Yards, Truist Point, The Stock and Grain Assembly, and a number of new restaurants, bars, and tap rooms.  And Rotary will be highly visible to all those that will venture along those sidewalks and pathways for years to come!
