Mark was born August 6, 1931 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

He graduated from James A. Gray High School in Winston-Salem in 1949.  He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1953 with a degree in mechanical engineering and received his Master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois.

Mark is a veteran of the Korean War and served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1953.

He married Margo Jackson Crotts in 1956 and they had two children.  Both children are engineering graduates of North Carolina State University.

In 1956, he and Charles L. Saunders founded Crotts & Saunders Engineering.  Mark retired and sold the company in September 2014.

Mark served as a Trustee of Catawba College, Trustee of North Carolina State University, and as president of the NC State Alumni Association.

He was named “Engineer of the Year” in 1985 by the North Carolina Society of Engineers.  In 2004, he was recognized by NC State with a Lifetime Achievement Award.  He was appointed by Governor Jim Martin to the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management Authority.

He is a member of First United Church of Christ and served as chairman of the building committee.

Mark joined the Rotary Club of Stratford in 1966 and served as president in 1969-70.  He joined the Rotary Club of Winston-Salem in 1984.  He served as district governor in 1980-81.

Mark has served 14 times as a representative of the Rotary International president; representative to the 1998 Council on Legislation; and member of several Rotary fellowships including scouting and flying Rotarians.

Mark has proudly presented Paul Harris Fellow recognition to more than fifty individuals.

He and Margo have attended 37 Rotary International Conventions.

Mark received the Rotary International Service Above Self Award in 1992.
