On Thursday, September 9th, the National Football League (NFL) will launch its 102nd season. The game will be broadcast at 8:20pm and will feature the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers against Dallas Cowboys.

Go back in time a few years. From 1970 to 2006, apart from Thanksgiving, if you wanted to watch live NFL games on TV in the regular season, your only option was to tune in on a Sunday at 1pm or 4pm or a Monday night at 8pm or 9pm.

What changed? In 2006, the NFL began televising live Sunday night games. In 2017, the NFL began broadcasting Thursday night games. By creating new pathways for people to watch their football games, the NFL is more dominant than ever in the world of broadcasting. In 2020 alone, of the top 100 most-watched shows, 69 of those were NFL broadcasts.

I mention this because like the NFL, Rotary must create new pathways to bring more people into Rotary. We can do this in two simple ways. First, we create different membership types such as corporate, family, satellite, or service. Second, we create new freestanding satellite clubs (only takes 8 people) or traditional clubs which meet the needs of evolving consumers.

With our newest addition of the Satellite Club of King-Stokes County, we have created four new satellite clubs over the last year. These clubs provide more opportunity for our community members to be a part of Rotary. Three of these new satellite clubs center around an alternative meeting time (evening) which is a more convenient time for many potential members in the workforce to attend meetings. Another satellite club in our district is focused on a passion, golf. Whether it is an alternative meeting time club, cause, or interest-based club, we expect to more than double the number of satellite clubs this year in District 7690 reaching more potential members, “where they are at.”
